24 May Invited Paper Presented at the 4th International Conference on Nationalism. Bilbao (Spain), 24 May 2024. ‘What is an Algorithmic Nation? Sovereignties Under Scrutiny’
On May 24, 2024, I had the honor of presenting my paper “What is an Algorithmic Nation? Sovereignties Under Scrutiny” at the 4th International Conference on Nationalism, held in Bilbao and organized by the Subiranotasuna Europako Herrietan Masterra (UPV/EHU). The event gathered scholars and researchers to discuss the pressing questions surrounding sovereignty and nationhood in an era of AI and digital transformation.
My paper focused on the concept of Algorithmic Nations, exploring how the rise of data-driven technologies and AI are reshaping traditional notions of sovereignty. Specifically, I examined how stateless nations, such as the Basque Country, can assert their sovereignty and identity in the face of global Big Tech dominance. The research delves into the implications of Web3 technologies, blockchain, and decentralized governance models, as tools to reclaim control over data and protect national interests in the digital realm.
This research aligns with the broader themes of the conference, which aimed to scrutinize the intersections of public, communal, and institutional sovereignty, particularly in the context of digital transformations. I would like to extend my thanks to the conference organizers for facilitating such an enriching discussion. Stay tuned for more updates as I continue to explore these pivotal issues.
